Domain Name Registration

Every website needs one. Choosing the wrong one or setting it up incorrectly creates problems that follow your business for years.

A domain name is more than a web address. It shows up in your email address, your Google Business Profile, your marketing materials, and every place you ask a customer to find you online. Getting it right from the start matters.

I help small businesses in Prescott, Chino Valley, Prescott Valley, and Dewey-Humboldt find, register, and configure domain names correctly and help businesses that already have a domain but need it moved or sorted out.

Domain Name Research and Recommendation

Before you register anything, it's worth thinking through the decision. A domain name should be easy to remember, easy to spell when spoken out loud, and reasonably close to your actual business name.

I'll research available options, flag anything worth avoiding like names that are too close to a competitor or a national brand, hard to type, or likely to cause confusion and I will recommend the best available choice for your business. Sometimes the obvious choice is available. Sometimes it isn't, and we need to look at alternatives.

Domain Registration

Once you've settled on a name, I handle the registration process. That includes selecting a reputable registrar, configuring privacy protection is available so your personal contact information isn't publicly listed in domain records, and setting up auto-renewal so the domain doesn't accidentally expire.

DNS Configuration

Registering a domain is only the first step. For your website and email to work, the domain's DNS records need to point to the right places like your hosting server, your email provider, and any other services connected to your domain.

DNS configuration is where a lot of people get stuck. The settings are technical, the terminology is unfamiliar, and a wrong entry can take your site or email offline. I handle it correctly and verify everything is working before I'm done.

Domain Transfers

If you already own a domain but it's registered somewhere inconvenient like an old registrar you no longer use, a web agency that holds it in their account, a hosting provider you're leaving, I can transfer it to the right place.

Transfers need to be handled carefully. Mistakes during a domain transfer can take a website offline for hours or longer. I manage the process step by step to make sure nothing breaks during the move. Often a transfer can be offline for up to 72 hours, realistically, 24 hours or less. 

Your domain should always be in your control. If a web agency, a former employee, or anyone else registered your domain in their account rather than yours, that's a problem worth fixing. You are one disagreement away from losing access to your own web address.

When I register a domain for a client, ownership is flexible based on what works best for the situation:

• If you want the domain in your own account with your own registrar login, I set it up that way and hand you the credentials.
• If you'd prefer I manage it on your behalf as part of an ongoing hosting or maintenance plan, I can do that too.

Either way, I'll be clear about who holds the domain and how to access it. No surprises.

Starting a New Business and Need a Domain
You have a business name, you need a web address, and you don't want to make a mistake you'll regret. I'll find the right option and get it set up.

Website is Ready But the Domain Isn't Pointed Correctly
The site is built, but it isn't live because the DNS isn't configured. This is a common last step that stops people cold. I'll connect everything and get you live.

Domain is Registered Somewhere Inconvenient
GoDaddy account from 2011 with an email address you no longer have access to, or a domain registered by a web designer who's no longer reachable. I've dealt with both. Recovery and transfer situations take more time, but they're usually solvable.

You Want to Add a New Domain to an Existing Setup
A second location, a new online service like an on-line store, a separate campaign URL or whatever the reason, I can register the additional domain and configure it to work alongside what you already have.

It's also a standard part of any new website build or hosting setup I do. If you're starting a new website project with me, domain registration and DNS configuration are included; you don't need to figure that piece out separately.

Dot Com is Still the Right Choice for Most Businesses

Other extensions exist — .net, .co, .cc, .io, .info and hundreds of others — but customers mindsets default to .com. If the .com version of your name is taken, that's important information. A domain that leads customers to a competitor when they mistype your extension is a real problem.

Shorter Is Better, With Limits

A domain that's easy to say out load and easy to type beats a long exact-match name. "PrescottPlumbingAndHeating.com" is harder to hand out verbally than "PrescottPlumbing.com."

Register For Multiple Years

Annual renewals are one more thing to track. Registering for two or more years upfront reduces the chance of accidental expiration, and some registrars offer a modest discount for longer terms.
