When a visitor lands on your website and their browser flags it as "Not Secure," most of them leave. They don't call to ask if it's safe. They don't wait around. They close the tab and move on.
An SSL certificate is what puts the padlock in the address bar and switches your site from HTTP to HTTPS. It encrypts the connection between your website and your visitors, protecting any information they submit by contact forms, login credentials, payment details. Without it, browsers actively warn people away from your site.
Google also uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. A site without SSL starts behind sites that have it, everything else being equal.

What's Actually Involved
Installing an SSL certificate sounds simple. Sometimes it is. Often it isn't.
Getting a cert installed and working correctly involves several moving parts that need to be handled in the right order:
Certificate Installation
Obtaining the right certificate for your domain, installing it on your hosting server, and configuring your site to serve all pages over HTTPS. This includes setting up automatic renewal so the certificate doesn't expire and trigger browser warnings down the road.
DNS Configuration
Some certificate types and hosting setups require DNS changes to verify domain ownership or route traffic correctly. I handle any DNS updates needed to get the certificate working without disrupting your site's availability.
Mixed Content Fixes
This is where most DIY SSL installations fall apart. Even after a certificate is installed, your site can still show security warnings if it's loading resources, images, scripts, stylesheets, over HTTP instead of HTTPS. These are called mixed content errors, and they break the padlock even on a properly installed certificate.

Verification and Testing
Once everything is installed and configured, I verify the certificate is valid, trusted by major browsers, and working correctly across your entire site; not just the homepage. That includes checking expiration dates, certificate chain validity, and HTTPS redirects so no one lands on an insecure version of your site.

One Thing Worth Knowing
Not all SSL certificates are equal. Most small business websites do fine with a standard Domain Validation (DV) certificate, which is what most hosting providers offer for free through Let's Encrypt. For sites handling e-commerce or sensitive customer data, a higher-grade certificate may be worth considering.
