What Is SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

When I first started building websites, I believed that if I built a great website, customers would naturally find it—a concept borrowed from the movie Field of Dreams: “If you build it, they will come.” Unfortunately, that isn’t how the internet works.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the process of improving your online presence so that potential customers can find your business when they search on Google and other search engines.

SEO has changed dramatically over the years. See a current list of changes. In the past, ranking well often meant focusing heavily on keywords, meta descriptions, and other technical optimizations. While those elements still matter, today’s SEO—especially Local SEO—is much more focused on trust, authority, relevance, and consistency across your entire online presence.

The rise of AI and evolving search algorithms has changed the playing field. Today, quality content helps establish authority, answer customer questions, and attract qualified leads over time. However, for many local businesses, success often comes from getting the fundamentals right before investing heavily in content marketing.

I use a systematic approach to evaluate your business’s online presence and identify opportunities for improvement. This includes reviewing your website, your Google Business Profile (GBP), and the consistency of your information across the web. The goal is to demonstrate to Google that your business is legitimate, trustworthy, active, and relevant to local customers.

My Local SEO services typically include:

  • Complete Google Business Profile and website optimization audit
  • Homepage and Google Business Profile landing page review and improvements
  • Business information consistency checks
  • Review and reputation management recommendations
  • Local citation and directory evaluation
  • Website content and on-page SEO recommendations
  • Technical SEO and performance review
  • Local search visibility analysis

Many businesses assume they need more backlinks, more blog posts, or a complete website redesign. While those strategies can be valuable, local search success often depends on ensuring that your website, Google Business Profile, reviews, business information, and online signals all support the same message.

SEO is not a one-time project. It is an ongoing process that builds momentum over time. Results can take several months to become visible, but consistent improvements often lead to better rankings, increased visibility, and more qualified leads.

My focus is practical Local SEO for small businesses—helping you appear where your customers are searching and converting that visibility into real business opportunities.
